Healthy Living: How to Snorkel like a Pro

Dear Alice,

Here are some tips on how to snorkel like a pro, and this for when you decide to pursue this amazing and fun activity of spending your free time during your next summer holidays.

  1. Invest in a good quality snorkeling equipment (i.e mask, fins and snorkels). This is quite important, even if it will cost you a bit more than expected, it is a good practice to be on the safe side and have a snorkeling equipment of good quality. I particularly enjoy the fins that are self adjustable and normal in size. They are more comfortable to wear, while still helping you to achieve a reasonable high speed when snorkeling.
  2. Wear a comfortable bathing suit. Most likely, the most comfortable bathing suits for snorkeling are the sporty bathing suits, which allow you to move freely and comfortable whilst enjoying the beautiful views of the deep blue seas or oceans.
  3. Choose a secure place to snorkel. Whether it is snorkeling in the seas or the oceans, it is always up to you, but do choose a secure place. If you are snorkeling in a new place, you could think about choosing a guide. The best snorkeling places could be right next to the swimming beaches, next to the ports, but they could be further away from the beaches, where I would highly recommend a guide.
  4. Go snorkeling in the afternoon, when the water is rather calm than agitated. This is a good practice if you want to enjoy the best views of the deep blue seas or oceans. In the early morning the water could also be calm, but the views are not so diverse and beautiful, when you can really enjoy spotting a variety of fishes.
  5. Before going snorkeling, put a reasonable amount of sun cream lotion to protect yourself from the sun rays. This is always a good advice to follow when being at the beach anyway!
  6. If you are a beginner, practice at the shore for 10-15 minutes wearing and using your snorkels under water. If this is your first time when you are snorkeling, try not to be too nervous or scared. It is normal to feel a certain amount of nervousness, as this is the case when you try new things, but take a deep breath and relax yourself. Snorkeling is an activity that requires a certain amount of concentration and calmness, and whereas it might seem easy at a first glace, it does require some relaxation from your side. It is normal to be scared of the unknown ocean. Plus claustrophobia could be a problem while you have your face in the water and you start breathing from the tube. Still, do not panic. Relax, and stay calm! Soon you will be able to control your breathing and feel comfortable to explore new territories.
  7. Whether you decide to have a guide or not, it is up to you. Still it is good to not go snorkeling on your own.
  8. Take your time while enjoying the beauties of the seas/oceans and do your best to protect them. While snorkeling, you should always respect the sea or the ocean, while enjoying its beauties.

I hope you will enjoy your next snorkeling session 🙂 !
Sincerely yours,
Madalina
