Austria’s Best Attractions: Things to Do in Vienna in One Day

Dear Alice,

If you ever plan to visit Vienna or if you ever have the chance to find yourself quickly strolling the streets of the wonderful capital of Austria, but you do not have enough time on your hands, then here is a quick guide for you containing the highlights and the main tips that will help you explore in one day one of Europe’s most beautiful cities that you should add to your travel bucket list.

While visiting Vienna yet again on a wonderful spring day a couple of days ago, I realized that Europe’s most livable and most visited city does know its way around its tourists. Vienna has it all and it is not afraid of showing it: cultural events, coffee houses, restaurants, hotels, shopping centers, museums, etc. You just ask for it, and Vienna will happily reply to you with a wide range of options and possibilities, which you can enjoy even in just a couple of hours.
So here is a quick guide for visiting Vienna in one day and here are some of the main highlights that you should not miss while in Vienna:

  1. Visit Stephansplatz: This is the main square located in the center of Vienna, so you cannot miss it, even if you want to. You can enjoy here everything, starting with the view, the shopping centers and the multitude of souvenirs shops. Just be sure to be armed with a lot of patience and tolerance. This is one of the most crowded places in Vienna. But it is definitely worth visiting it.
  2. Visit St. Stephen’s Cathedral (i.e. Stephansdom): Located at the Stephansplatz, this is one of the most tallest churches in the world. It is definitely a sight for the eye. Its architecture and its history are impressive, so it is definitely worth seeing it, both from the outside and from the inside. Just make sure you do not loose the notion of time if you decide to visit the Cathedral on the inside as well.
  3. Take a break and enjoy a good Viennese coffee at one of the traditional coffee houses at Stephansplatz or in its surroundings: I would recommend here to just choose spontaneously one traditional coffee house at Stephansplatz. Just go with your gut feeling here I would say, but since you are in Vienna I would definitely recommend a traditional coffee house or shop, don’t just settle down for Starbucks, you can visit the well-know coffee chain almost everywhere out-there in the world. I would just say: while in Vienna do as the Austrians do.
  4. Enjoy a cultural event in one of Vienna’s traditional theaters, like Ronacher or Raimund Theater: Cultural events in Vienna are just the soups for your soul, a full source of energy and enlightenment, so you will not regret it. Just be sure to book such an event early enough. You can book tickets online to any cultural event in Vienna via http://www.oeticket.com/ or https://www.wien-ticket.at/de/home.
  5. Visit Vienna State Opera House: Even if only from the outside, it is worth taking a long glance of it.
  6. Visit Hofburg Palace: Yes yet other impressive building and architectural work of art.
  7. Visit Austrian National Library: You will not miss the library since it is located in the surroundings of the Hofburg Palace.
  8. Visit the Albertina Museum (or any other museum of your interest in the city center): Vienna is the best place to enjoy art and culture, so you have a lot of museums to choose from. Albertina is only one of my recommendations.
  9. Go for a walk in the Botanical Garden: Especially if you are visiting Vienna on a sunny day, this is a great way to disconnect yourself from the busy crowds, to take a step back and just relax for a couple of moments.
  10. Have lunch and/or dinner in one of the traditional Austrian restaurants: You will not miss them, there is a wide range of possibilities you can choose from. Also don’t be afraid to try one traditional Austrian dish, they are simply delicious.

Visiting Vienna for the “Tanz der Vampire” (Dance of the Vampires) Musical at the Ronacher Theater, great performance, great music!

Stephansdom is just impressive, every time I am in Vienna I am amazed by its beauty!

Remember Vienna is very windy almost every time of the year, so when in Vienna take your pictures in some wind safe areas 🙂 .

I

Sincerely yours,
Madalina
