Healthy Living: Wandern in Styria

Dear Alice,

Today I want to talk to you about the fascinating activity of “wandern” (in German) in the beautiful state of Styria, whose capital is Graz, the wonderful city I am currently living in (as you probably know it by now). I did not translate the German term “wandern” on purpose, because I believe it has a special charm as it is. Usually “wandern” and “hiking” are equivalent, but I highly associate the term “wandern” with the specific activity of hiking in Austria.

You must know that hiking in Austria is very popular, and many people practice it, from young children to grown-ups and elder people. So why is hiking so popular here? I can come up with some reasons off the top of my head: first of all, I think it is a great way to exercise in fresh air, so any sports’ lover will enjoy this activity since it increases the physical condition. Secondly, I think it is a magnificent way of admiring the scenery that any location has to offer, and thus any guru traveler will enjoy it. Finally, hiking can be a way to relieve stress and to improve the state of mind of any work-alcoholic individual or simple any person going for a hike. From my point of view, hiking is also a great activity to spend time with your friends in the weekend or in holidays. It is a great way to catch up with your stories and to enjoy together all that the nature has to offer us! Of course one has to also follow the rules, and make sure to always stay on the track while hiking. But this should not be a problem, as in Austria the hiking tracks are very well marked.

It is impressive how everyone is so much into “wandern” in Austria! And now so am I! It is a great activity of enjoying the beautiful and unique landscapes of Austria, and discovering a little bit of time for yourself and your thoughts. Up there where the hiking path is taking you, you feel that you can find the answer and the solution to each issue that might have bothered you before. Or maybe it is just the fresh air! Either way it is a lovely activity, that I pretty much enjoy. A lot! I hope you got a little bit of interest in the activity of hiking!

That’s why I would like to share some photos with you from my hiking days in Styria, called also “The green heart of Austria”. I am sure that while looking at the pictures you will understand why Styria has such a pseudonim 🙂 .

Sincerely yours,
madalina
